Tips for hiring a Contractor in HoustonHouston Painting Companies

Is that garish green stove ready for replacement? Does your garage door no longer open? If so, you will probably be hiring a contractor soon. Hiring a home improvement contractor feels harder than picking a new paint color, but don't panic. These tips for hiring a home improvement remodeler will illustrate what to do - "and much, much more" importantly, what not to do, as you improve your home.

Your home is your largest investment. The proper home improvement can add value to the home while making it nicer to live in. Going with the lowest quotes when hiring a contractor isn't always the way to go.  Get some estimates for a home remodeling job so that you can get a sense for the range of prices. For larger and more expensive jobs, the more approximations the better.

Once you've narrowed down your list of a few probably remodelers, here are a few tips for hiring a home improvement builder:

Get references! Ask neighbors, friends, family and coworkers if they know of any trustworthy companies who do the type of home improvement project that you want. Most likely, you will get a few references for companies who might be right for your job.

Houston Roofing CompaniesOnce you have created a list of likely contractors, do a some research. Check with consumer protection agencies such as the Better business bureau to see if any complaints are on file. Remember that having no grievances does not guarantee a reputable builder; it just means that no customers have filed a formal grievance.

Interview the home remodeling contractor. The best option you can use to determine if you can work with the remodeler is to meet person to person. Does the builder listen? How long have they been in business? Do they use sub contractors?

The most significant tip for hiring a builder is to ask for references and check up on references. Visit and inspect completed jobs and ask the remodeler's previous clients how well they worked with the contractor. Drive by and inspect current jobs and ask about trustworthiness, sanitation, and how well they keep to the budget.

Check the copies of liability for the builder and sub contractors. You don't want to be liable for any problems on the job.

Sometimes, the best tips for hiring a remodeler involve what to avoid. Typical signs of warning include:

  • Door-to-door sales visits - A reputable builder should not have to go door to door to get business.

  • Discounts for recommendations to other customers.

  • A contractor demands money up front - small bills preferred and asks for money to pay for materials. A reputable contractor should be able to pay for construction materials before they begin the job. Ensure you don't pay the whole thing up front - the schedule for payments should be based on a completion schedule.

  • The builder is not listed in the phone book.  They don't need a huge advertisement in the yellow pages but a listed business phone is a sign of a long-standing company.

  • The builder suggests obtaining financing from a lender he knows. Lots of lender scams that start this way. Do not get caught.

Follow these tips for hiring a home improvement contractor. Your work will go better and stay within your budget and time frame. Soon, that avocado green oven will be a distant memory as you cook in your shiny, newly remodeled kitchen.
